What Screen Is in the 2015-2016 Chaparral Vortex?
A quick look at the display behind your helm.
The 2015 and 2016 Chaparral Vortex jet boats came equipped with a 6.5 inch Medallion Viper 1 touch screen at the helm. It controls your gauges, engine data, and system settings. When it fails, the boat still runs, but you lose visibility and control of nearly everything on the dash.
If you are not sure which screen you have, measure the display diagonally. The Viper 1 in the Vortex measures 6.5 inches. The part number label on the back of the unit will match one of the numbers below.

These three issues account for nearly every Vortex screen that arrives at our shop.

Delamination
The touch layer separates from the LCD underneath. It starts as a foggy or bubbled patch, often at an edge, and tends to spread across the screen. Beyond looking bad, the separation can interfere with touch accuracy and let moisture creep in.
LCD Defects
Years of direct sun take a toll on the panel itself. We frequently see UV burn marks, yellowing, dark or dying backlights, stripes, and black spots that make gauges hard to read, especially in bright daylight.
Frozen or Unresponsive Touch
You tap and nothing happens, or the screen registers touches in the wrong spot. Some owners also report ghost touching, where the display acts like it has a mind of its own. Either way, you have lost control of your helm.
Why These Failures Happen
The marine environment is brutal on bonded touch screens.
The original display was bonded with adhesives that have been known to break down under the conditions every jet boat lives in. Direct sun bakes the screen for hours at a time. Heat cycles expand and contract the layers daily. Constant vibration from the jet drives works on every bond in the assembly. Humidity and spray look for any gap to enter.
Over several seasons, that combination tends to defeat the OEM construction. The adhesive lets go and delamination begins, UV exposure degrades the LCD, and the touch circuitry starts to misbehave. None of this means anything is wrong with the expensive circuit boards inside the unit. In most cases, those are perfectly healthy.
How to Remove the Vortex Display
One of the easiest removals of any boat we service.
-
1Disconnect power. Turn the battery switch off before touching any connections.
-
2Remove the mounting screws. A handful of screws hold the display housing to the dash panel.
-
3Unplug the harness. Pull the unit forward gently and disconnect the cable connections on the back.
-
4Pack it well and ship it. Use the prepaid UPS label we email you after checkout. Wrap the unit generously.
