Tige R-Series Owners: Got a Failing Tige Touch 2? Here's the Fix Your Dealer Won't Tell You About
Got a 2015–2017 Tige R-Series with a failing Touch 2 helm display? Frozen touch, ghost presses, sunburn, dim backlight — here’s exactly what’s wrong, why dealers are quoting $4,000+ for replacements, and how to fix it the right way without spending a fortune.
Tige R-Series Owners: Got a Failing Tige Touch 2? Here’s the Fix Your Dealer Won’t Tell You About
If you bought a 2015–2017 Tige R-Series — R20, R21, RZ2, RZX, or ZX5 — you got the Tige Touch 2 helm display: a 7" touchscreen that controls your TAPS, ballast, surf system, audio, and engine data. Five years on, these screens are failing en masse. Ghost touch, frozen panels, faded LCD — if it’s happening to yours, you’re not alone, and you’ve got a way better option than spending thousands on a new unit.
The Tige Touch 2 7" helm display — factory-installed across 2015–2017 Tige R-Series boats and built on the Murphy HV700 platform.
What Is the Tige Touch 2?
The 7" helm display on R-Series boats
The Tige Touch 2 is the second-generation Tige helm display, factory-installed on R-Series boats from model years 2015 through 2017. It’s built on the Murphy HV700 platform — the same hardware Nautique, MasterCraft, and Centurion used in the same era — with Tige-specific firmware running on top.
Tige replaced this system with the Tige CLEAR system starting in 2018, but if you own a 2015–2017 R-Series, you have the Tige Touch 2. And if you’re reading this guide, it’s probably acting up.
🤻 Touch 1 vs Touch 2 vs CLEAR — quick reference
Tige Touch 1 (2010–2014): 6.5" Medallion display. Delaminates with watery bubbles behind the glass. See our Touch 1 repair guide →
Tige Touch 2 (2015–2017): 7" HV700 display. Ghost touch, frozen panels, sunburn — this guide covers it.
Tige CLEAR (2018–2022): 10.6" PV1100 Murphy display. We repair these too — see our Tige CLEAR PV1100 mail-in repair →
The 4 Most Common Failures on Tige Touch 2
What we see on these screens every week
Frozen and unresponsive touch is the #1 issue we see on Tige Touch 2 displays — closely followed by ghost touch as the digitizer continues to age out:
⏱ Frozen / Unresponsive Touch
The #1 issue on Tige Touch 2. You press the screen and nothing happens. Buttons don’t register, settings won’t open, and on the worst units the entire display freezes. Often comes and goes before failing completely.
🔮 Ghost Touch / Phantom Press
Random button presses, menus opening on their own, surf side flipping mid-set, ballast turning on without you. Common on units that have started failing but haven’t fully frozen yet.
☀️ UV Burn & LCD Defects
Sunburned screen, faded image, yellowing, dark spots, vertical stripes, or random colors. Direct sun on the helm during day-after-day on the lake takes a toll over five+ seasons.
🌓 Dim / Burned-Out Backlight
Display still works but is unreadable in sunlight. The backlight degrades over thousands of hours of use. Eventually fails completely on some units.
Why It’s Happening
Five+ years of marine punishment
The Tige Touch 2 wasn’t a bad display when it launched, but the conditions on a wakeboard boat helm are brutal:
- Direct sun on the helm — UV exposure breaks down the digitizer’s adhesive bond and fades the LCD over time
- Engine and wave vibration — works the touch panel out of alignment year after year
- Daily heat cycling — expand/contract stress on every internal bond
- Marine humidity & spray — gets behind the screen as adhesive seals weaken, accelerating LCD damage
- Aging touch sensor electronics — original digitizers were noise-sensitive and develop ghost touch as they age
